Accoras wholeheartedly endorses the Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Declaration and the associated Call to Action.

Accoras is committed to Closing the Gap and improving mental, social and emotional outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, the First Peoples of this country. We recognise that, as an early intervention mental health service provider, we have a responsibility to actively contribute to Reconciliation within Australia. We are committed to reducing racism and other forms of discrimination and disadvantage that damage the physical, social and emotional wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People. We are committed to meeting the needs of all our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander service users in a culturally safe and effective manner.

Accoras recognises the wisdom and enduring culture of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander People, past and present, as the foundation of this great country. This wisdom tells us everything we need to know to do our part to help close the gap, if we are prepared to listen. Accoras strives to always listen – to our community’s Elders, and to our emerging young leaders, who are the Elders of the future. We will do our part to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership within the mental health system.

As a proud aboriginal woman & a person with lived experience of Mental Health recovery & a survivor of suicide I strongly believe that by implementing recommendations in the Gayaa Dhuwi (Proud Spirit) Declaration throughout Australian services we are able to better support aboriginal people to get the help they need. This would help reduce the high rate of suicide in our communities & when working empower us to make informed decisions about our own mental health care.

Our organisation is committed to improving the lives of peoples from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds. We are working on our RAP. We know that meaningful improvements in the mental health system will only come when leadership is placed in the hands of peoples from Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander backgrounds.
